FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT YOUR HAIR

  • At least 3mm long. Think “grain of rice”. At least Japanese to Jasmine if you want to be specific. And if in doubt, the longer, the better. We can always trim if need be.

  • For areas below the hips, aim for every 4 weeks. Hair above the hips grows at varying rates, so underarms might need sugaring every 2-3 weeks, while arms or abdomen can wait longer.

  • Yes, regular sugaring every 2-5 weeks, when hair is around 3.5mm, targets the anagen phase. Over time, this weakens the follicles, resulting in finer hair and eventually less regrowth.

ABOUT YOUR SKIN

  • Yes, sugaring is suitable for all skin types and hair textures. Our lukewarm sugar paste only removes dead skin cells and hair, leaving live skin cells untouched.

Made from just sugar, water, and lemon juice, the paste is 100% eco-friendly and biodegradable, and any residue rinses off easily with warm water.

If you have concerns, feel free to discuss them with your sugarist before your session.

  • Most people find sugaring less painful than waxing. The sugar paste doesn’t stick to live skin cells, so there’s no skin pulling. Plus, the hair is removed in the natural direction of growth, reducing discomfort and trauma to the skin. Redness typically subsides quickly, and with regular sugaring, your hair becomes finer, making each session even more comfortable.

  • It’s common to experience minor bumps or rashes after sugaring, especially if it's your first time or it's been a while. This reaction is your body’s way of responding to the extraction of hair at the root. It usually subsides within 72 hours and is not an allergy to the sugar paste itself.

To minimise irritation, avoid heat, comedogenic products, and picking at your skin. Over time, these reactions tend to decrease as your skin gets used to sugaring.

For first-timers, especially for facial, back, or chest sugaring, we recommend requesting a patch test.

  • Sugaring typically results in fewer ingrown hairs compared to waxing or shaving. Because the hair is removed with the direction of growth, it reduces follicle distortion and hair breakage.

If you’re prone to ingrowns, speak to your sugarist about the best aftercare routine for you.

  • If you’re taking any medication, it’s best to consult with your doctor before booking a sugaring session. Certain medications can make your skin more sensitive, increasing the risk of irritation or tearing.

  • Since these products can make skin more sensitive, we advise waiting at least three months after discontinuing their use before sugaring the treated areas.

  • We don’t recommend sugaring for clients currently on Accutane or similar medications, as they can make the skin more prone to damage. We suggest waiting 3 to 6 months after stopping the medication and recommend a patch test before your first session.

  • Yes, as long as you're using a period cup or a fresh tampon.

Your period might make you more sensitive, so it's a good idea to call your studio in advance if you're expecting "Aunt Flo." We’ll do our best to accommodate you, but sensitivity may be heightened in the days leading up to and during your period.

  • Yes, sugaring is safe as long as you're past your first trimester and have a healthy pregnancy.

Our sugar paste is 100% natural, but you may be more sensitive than usual. It’s crucial to consult your gynaecologist before booking an appointment.

Please inform us of your pregnancy when you schedule so we can prepare your treatment accordingly.

  • We recommend waiting 1 to 3 months after a natural birth or 3 to 6 months after a caesarean. This timing depends on your childbirth method and your gynaecologist’s advice. Once cleared by your doctor, you’re welcome to book an appointment.

Postpartum recovery varies, so consult with your Sugarist for personalised advice.

  • While we don’t make recommendations, if you choose to engage in sexual activity, it’s best to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after your Bikini or Brazilian treatment.

Follicles are open post-treatment, and sweat and bacteria can irritate freshly sugared skin, potentially leading to inflammation, tenderness, or infections.
